Earlier this month, a 32-year-old Greek man brought something remarkable to his local police station: a statue of a woman draped in flowing cloth, missing its arms and head. He’d found it encased in a black plastic bag next to garbage cans on the street.

According to The Associated Press and a statement from Greek police, a man in Neoi Epivates near the city of Thessaloniki found an approximately 31-inch headless marble statue of a woman in a trash bag next to a garbage can. He turned it over to the authorities, who then passed it on to archaeologists to further examine the object.

On January 18, a man walked into a police station in northern Greece with a black plastic bag he'd just found among garbage bins in the beachside town of Neoi Epivates — and inside was a 2,000-year-old statue that had been inexplicably thrown away.
