The Twins claimed Irvin off waivers on Monday but it's a bit surprising to see Alcala optioned as the corresponding move.

The Minnesota Twins optioned right-handed relief pitcher Jorge Alcala to Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, clearing roster space for Cole Irvin, who was claimed on waivers Monday from the Baltimore Orioles.

Still, Alcala had been among the Twins’ later-inning options, unlike some of the pitchers who remain on the roster, making the decision to option him to make room on the roster for newly-claimed Cole Irvin a surprising one to many.
