Pope Francis brought Robert Prevost to the Vatican in 2023 as the powerful head of the office that vets bishop nominations, one of the most important jobs in the Catholic Church. On Thursday, he ascended to become Pope Leo XIV — the first pontiff from the United States.

With the election of Pope Leo XIV as the head of the Catholic church, all eyes turned to his family. The youngest son of Louis and Mildred Prevost, Pope Leo has two older brothers: John Joseph Prevost and Louis Martín Prevost.

The newly anointed Pope Leo XIV came to the balcony clad in a white cassock topped by a red cape trimmed in ermine and draped in a gold embroidered sash. He clasped his hands in prayer and smiled as the crowds chanted his name, and “ Viva La Papa! ”
