The European Commission has ramped up its investigation into Elon Musk’s X social network after the tech mogul criticized European governments in recent weeks, and just days before President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the White House.

Musk's X is suspected of manipulating the platform's systems to give far-right posts and politicians greater visibility over other political groups.

The European Union is considering expanding its investigation into whether Elon Musk's social media network X breached its content moderation rulebook, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing the bloc's tech policy chief.

The European Union is putting in place additional investigatory measures as part of its current proceedings against X, which were launched in December 2023. The EU Commission said Friday it had asked the X platform to provide documentation regarding recent changes to its system by Feb 15.

Musk has spent the last few weeks engaged in a campaign against various European governments. The most dramatic conflict has involved Musk’s war on Keir Starmer in Britain, though Musk has also spent a significant amount of time promoting a far-right political party in Germany that is said to have ties to neo-Nazis.

The European Commission said on Friday it was stepping up its investigation into whether Elon Musk's social media network X breached EU rules on content moderation with requests for information and an order for it to retain relevant documents.
