The FBI has provided the Justice Department with names of employees who worked on January 6-related cases after a new demand from the acting deputy attorney general, capping a weeklong back-and-forth between bureau leadership – who had sought to protect agent and staff identities – and the department.

The acting deputy attorney general accused FBI leadership of “insubordination” by refusing to identify a “core team” of bureau employees who worked on January 6 investigations, while trying to assure that rank-and-file agents who “simply followed orders” will not be fired unless they “acted with corrupt or partisan intent,

An anonymous group of FBI employees sued the U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday, seeking to protect the identities of those agents and others who investigated supporters of Donald Trump for storming the U.

Two sets of FBI agents who worked on cases stemming from the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol — as well as the criminal investigations of President Donald Trump — have filed lawsuits to block Justice Department leadership from assembling lists of agents they say will be used as part of a retaliation campaign.

The DOJ and lawyers for a group of FBI agents are trying to negotiate an agreement that would prevent the DOJ from releasing the names of FBI agents who probed Jan. 6.
