Nearly a dozen people are believed to be dead and many more injured as several fires broke out across Southern California amid historically dry and windy conditions.

Two Los Angeles County wildfires which tore through more than 34,000 acres in four days, killing at least 10 people and destroying more than 10,000 structures, are now among the five most destructive fires recorded in the state of California.

A new fire — the Kenneth Fire — erupted Thursday afternoon, so far spreading across 1,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says that blaze is 35% contained.

Coverage of the fires ravaging Altadena, Malibu, Pacific Palisades and Pasadena, including stories about the devastation, issues firefighters faced and the weather.

Though the Palisades and Eaton fires are smaller, they rank high in structures burned. Combined, they would equal the second-most destructive California wildfire in history, with more than 9,000 structures burned, according to early Cal Fire estimates. A more detailed analysis of the total number of destroyed structures is still underway.

The Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills follows other blazes in the L.A. area, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, that have displaced tens of thousands.
