The storm system will eventually drift its way into the western Caribbean as Tropical Storm Sara. The system will most likely strengthen into Hurricane Sara in the southern Gulf of Mexico. It’s still too early to tell where it will end up, but some models show the system moving east and into Florida.

A tropical disturbance in the Caribbean Sea is likely to develop into a tropical depression this week and, according to some initial computer models, may become Tropical Storm Sara – the 18th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The NHC said Tuesday it is tracking a tropical wave in the Caribbean Sea that could become a tropical depression by the end of the week.

With just a few weeks remaining in the 2024 hurricane season, the tropics are still quite active. Confidence is now growing in regards to a new tropical system forming over the next 48 hours, with a 90% chance of development over the next week.

Tropical Storm Rafael formed Monday afternoon in the Caribbean Sea, where it is expected to cross Jamaica, the Grand Cayman Islands, and Cuba, before entering the Gulf of Mexico this week. It is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before weakening back down to a tropical storm in the Gulf.

A disturbance in the Caribbean has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression by the end of the week and some computer models show that it may eventually become Tropical Storm Sara. According to the National Hurricane Center,
