Sovereignty won the 151 st Kentucky Derby Saturday at a sloppy Churchill Downs. At 9-1, fourth when the betting windows closed, the 3-year-old colt edged pre-race favorite Journalism. Jockey Junior Alvarado won his first Derby while owner Bill Mott notched his second.

Sovereignty is a Godolphin homebred. It’s the first Derby win for that ownership group. Sovereignty’s sire is Into Mischief and his mare is Crowned, by Bernardini. Sovereignty is now 3-2-0 in six career starts.

Kentucky Derby has come and gone, giving fans another exciting finish. Sovereignty defeated Journalism down the stretch to win the 151st Kentucky Derby. Baeza finished third in the race, while Final Gambit came in fourth.
