Max Holloway took advantage of his last chance to beat Dustin Poirier with a unanimous decision win over The Diamond at UFC 318 in his opponent's retirement fight in New Orleans on Saturday night.
Holloway defeated Dustin Poirier in a unanimous decision to retain the UFC BMF Championship in UFC 318 at the Smoothie King Center. The win for Holloway is the first in three fights against Poirier, who beat him in 2012 and 2019.
To be sure, Poirier (30-9) has had a decorated career. The former Interim UFC lightweight champion owns 15 wins by knockout and eight by submission, with 13 first-round finishes. “The Diamond” holds wins against Conor McGregor twice, and his two most recent victories are against Benoit Saint Denis and Michael Chandler.
Poirier had his final fight on Saturday night in New Orleans, in the lightweight main event of UFC 318—a card that was built for him. His opponent was Max Holloway, a former featherweight champion he had beaten twice before, and on paper, had all the skills to beat again.
