Mar 27, 2007 · I just picked up a 50LB bag of Pea Gravel from Home Depot for $2.79. Extremely dirty out of out the bag, but after a lot (and I mean A LOT) of rinsing, it looks great. Thanks for the idea and tips.. I'm only using a small amount (for now), but even so, can't beat the value. Prices for 'aquarium gravel' at a fish store are downright ludicrous.

Jan 24, 2020 · I went to the home depot and tried to find the finest grain gravel I could. I found this stuff called paver base for 4 bucks a bag. You can look it up on the home depot website, looks like the perfect substrate. I doubt it will be good for plants right away until you put some fish in there and the waste builds up.

Oct 30, 2022 · I use mesh bags for aqua soil to keep it from leaking up through my substrate layers while allowing roots to penetrate through (I do 3 layers with gravel on bottom, mesh bags of aqua soil on top of that, and sand to cap it off as shown in photo). If you want to build height, get some cheap pea gravel from a hardware store.

Aug 4, 2010 · Before putting your new water in, scoop out the gravel. After all the gravel is out, add the sand VERY carefully (I usually use my hand and kind of set it on the bottom of the tank) so it doesn't billow up. I would wait a day and then do another small WC (only about 10%, just enough to vac the new sand) to catch any particles you may have missed.
